Flashback!

Today's blog is inspired by my high school en devours in the academic decathlon!
Yes, I admit it! I was that much of a nerd!
But I learned so much through this experience.
I can't recall how I came about joining, just remember that the teacher was a sweet lady and she truly impacted my life!
Funny,  because I just attended a networking event where we spoke on how some teachers you will remember for the rest of your life.
I thank Mrs. Hidalgo for all she did to instill the passion of learning in us. I touched on subjects that year that I would never have considered at such a young age!

For those of you wondering what the heck is Academic Decathlon? Here is a definition taken from

The California Academic Decathlon is a statewide non-profit organization that promotes an educational experience providing a format in which teams of nine high school students compete in academic events. All California public and private high schools are eligible to compete. The Academic Decathlon embodies a partnership of business, foundations and individuals in cooperation with the education community and county offices of education.

I may not have placed but I got honored for my interviewing skills!

The interview lasts seven whole minutes! Can you imagine how nerve wrecking this seems for a high school student!
The top is a picture of our group. The bottom is a picture of one of my high school best friends, and we still remain friends until this day.

A close up of the certificate!
I did receive a letter for being involved with this program, which I thought was awesome!

Mrs. Hidalgo took me to my very first UCLA football game and I can say that maybe this is where my passion began for college football!

The main point of this blog though, was to share the four minute speech I wrote for this competition!
The topic I chose : Happiness
It was inspired by  En Vougue's -Free Your Mind song....

Happiness....
What is it?
A dictionary definition gives us good fortune; or prosperity; a state of well being; contentment; a pleasurable or satisfying experience; enthusiasm to the point of obsession; characterized by a dazed irresponsible state.
Is there really a true definition of happiness?
It's an emotion, a feeling described differently by each individual in the world. To some happiness is impressing others with clothing attire, while others regard happiness as getting a meal to eat every day.
Some regard the American dream as their true happiness. That social ideal of human equality and materialistic riches, but in reality are these people truly happy? The dream that others see ass an enchantment they find a total nightmare and entrapment.
Do we not hear daily news on celebrities who have reached fame and wealth but are not content? Everyday parents push their children to be well educated so that they may fall into wealth, but from examples we can conclude that money does not always equal enjoyment.
The famous ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle once said " ...happiness is the highest good, being in realization and perfect practice of virtue, which some can attain, while others have little or none of it...."
If his words are true in effect, is there not a possibility that in life we might experience true happiness, how are we to know if we can't really explain it?
Now let's take a predicament, if the world could trade all sorrows and suffering for enjoyment, or shall we say, happiness, How many would want to live lives just full of content moments?
There must be a balance, or else would not life be incredibly dull? One must experience sorrow, fear, seclusion, and as well joy.
So say we did live in a world with no worries, would we not always be in a dazed irresponsible state? Is this how we would really want to live our lives?
Mark Twain, the famous American writer once said " The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.", but take his words and meditate on them, ....if this were true for all people would not terrorist acts seize? Some see these people as madmen, which can easily be concluded by their brutal actions, but to them is this not their happiness? Remember happiness is enthusiasm to the point of obsession. So they take joy in creating life miserable for others. Of course most common people would not link such ideas with the term contentment, but that leads us once again to the same question,
What truly is happiness?
Go on......THINK....
The term happiness....hard to explain outside our own borders...How can we ever relate to one another in this emotion but yet most are certain they can.
Has life really given you happiness?
For me happiness comes from surpassing life's obstacles, may it be great or small, knowing that with determination I can overcome the barriers. Of course, not the president, your famous actor, or myself could tell you. It is only something explainable and experienced by you, your own individual.

Save Mt. Rubidoux Cross

I recently wrote a blog section on Mt. Rubidoux and the giant cross at the top of the mountain, now it seems as if this cross has created some kind of controversy and is a highly debatable topic!
On the news I seen that they are wanting to take it down...something about it not separating state and religion???? It's a positive symbol and means a lot to a number of people why not just let it be? ....
After much thought and a little bit of research I answer to this in this matter. Would this not be an infringement of our first amendment right? .....It clearly states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." I also found that during "the Board of Education of Kiryas Joel Village School District v. Grumet,[1] Justice David Souter, writing for the majority, concluded that 'government should not prefer one religion to another, or religion to irreligion.' " Furthermore, "Justice Hugo Black adopted Jefferson's words in the voice of the Court, and concluded that 'government must be neutral among religions and nonreligion: it cannot promote, endorse, or fund religion or religious institutions.' The Court has affirmed it often, with majority, but not unanimous, support." So in conclusion I guess the real question to pose would be who in reality is against having this cross a top the mountain? Personally I do not feel there could possibly be such a disturbance by it, it's a peaceful symbol. Is it really hurting anyone in any kind of way? It's not killing anyone by its presence.....or is it?

Alicia Robinson writes the following in her report
"Mount Rubidoux, a public park beloved by the community, has had a cross on its top since 1907. It is home to what locals say is the longest-running outdoor Easter sunrise service, which began in 1909. The current 35-foot concrete and steel cross replaced a wooden one in 1963, historian Glenn Wenzel said. " She further explains that this matter will be put on hold due to "200 residents pack[ing] the council chambers and speak[ing] for more than two hours. Most who spoke urged the City Council to save the cross."
A current poll shows the following
Today's Poll
The city of Riverside will consider selling the Mount Rubidoux cross to avoid a lawsuit from a group that advocates separation of church and state. What do you think officials should do?

Let's Get Fit!

With flu season attacking many of us, myself claimed a victim, what better topic to cover than fitness and nutrition!
Being a Mom hardly leaves time for the gym, so you can imagine how much more difficult that can get being a single Mom!
Since having my son,  I been putting off my fitness for quite some time now. If I did not pay attention to my nutrition, who knows where I'd be. For the past 3 years I have adopted a vegan diet, and although I do cheat here and there, for the most part I am very disciplined. Despite my good nutrition, I knew I was still missing a key element - exercise!

About a 20 minute drive from my home I can enjoy the San Bernardino Mountains in Lyttle Creek. They also have a beautiful Mountain Resort that I have had the pleasure of visiting! This is one of my most common hikes due to it's proximity.
This is one of the many falls located in these mountains, Middle Fork Lyttle Creek.  I have much exploring to do and find the other falls in this area. This goes to show that no matter how close something is to you don't underestimate the beauty that you find. I have to say every time I go it's different! No experience ever compares.

 Represeting! LOL!
The good thing about this hike is the beautiful river that flows, so if you get too sweaty you can take a dip and refresh yourself before heading home!

By far one of my favorite places to hike is up Mt. Rubidoux in Riverside, CA. The scenery from the top is breathtaking. There is a lot of history alone in this mountain top.

I absolutely love the cross at the top, a constant reminder that He should be at the center of our worlds. This cross is a dedication to Father Junipero Serra.

Sometimes I like to come here and do some sketches!

This is at the Azusa mountains. For those that enjoy off-roading  this is definitely a neat place to come!

When time permits I enjoy going out to L.A.
Mulholland Scenic Parkway and Corridor is one of the best spots to take a break from the real world!

I do enjoy hiking here and there, but that is definitely not enough!

Fun Fact: The Hollywood sign began as a promotional/marketing tactic to attract more people to this area. By the looks of it , seems to have been a total success!

Can't forget my best friend! He also needs his workout! Meet my furry pet Mambo!

Another lovely hike and fall at the Rim of the World!

Thus, I promised myself  to get at least 30 minutes daily of some form of physical activity. For starters I rummaged through my DVDs and found some fun dance workouts. Below are the videos I will be popping in to do some cardiac training.  Can't forget about my Yoga, absolutely love it!

These videos I found at affordable prices at Ross! But now a days you can find anything on YouTube so if price is an issue I recommend you start there!

For those trying to ward off germs during this flu season focus your diet on high Vitamin  C  intake. Broccoli, Orange juice not from concentrate, kiwis, and echinacea are my best friends during the cold/flu months.

As suggested by one of my sorority sisters boosting your energy and immunity is as simple as making yourself a juice!
Take 2-3 handfuls of spinach, 1 apple, 1 lemon and 1/2 thumb size ginger and you got a great juice.

Here are some general tips for better health compiled by Cindy Kanarek Culver a licensed dietician.
Use each tip for a specific goal and add on weekly. Remember that these should be viewed as behavioral changes. For starters it may be wise to keep a food log and keep track of everything you drink and eat at least 3/4 days out of the week.

  1. Eat when you are physically hungry!  - Try to find another non-food activity when bored.
  2. Put your utensil down between bites! - Watch your portion sizes.
  3. Use nutrition Fact Labels! - Increase dietary fiber and choose the right carbohydrates to maintain a healthy weight. Choose whole grain products and reduce processed carbohydrates saturated trans fat and fatty acids to maintain a healthy heart.
  4. Use lean cuts of meat, poultry, and Fish! - Try to eat grass fed meats to avoid unnecessary hormones, or soy products and nuts.

Mini Me

 We meet again bloggers.
Today is the infamous throwback thursday!
In honor of this trend I decided to take it back to my toddler years.

Here I am at five years old, my first beauty peagent in my beautiful country, El Salvador.

I took second place. I vaguely recall this day but I know it involved riding on a  float in a parade. God only knows how at merely five I was able to stand in front of a large crowd!
And yes soon after I was marching down the streets of the capital showing my school spirit as a "cachiporrista". My Godmother made this skirt for me as she was a seamstress and very talented at it! During these years I attended a Christian school by the name of Liceo Cristiano Reverendo Juan Bueno. So I guess you could say that I started very young in this path of entertaining. I thank God for my talents every day and pray that He will continue to guide me in the right path so that these talents may be used to do His will!
